Velocity A-23 Rims

DESCRIPTION

The A23 rim is based off our proven Aerohead race rim. With a wider footprint, the A23 allows for a more aerodynamic rim/tire combination when paired with a 23c tire. The tire profile mimics the characteristics of a tubular, gaining increased control and lower rolling resistance without the inconvenience of tubular glue or the dangers of irreparable roadside mechanicals.

Strength:

These wheels never once went out of true in five years: even when the rim cracks appeared.

Weakness:

I have ridden a set of A23s for about five years, swapping them out for Ksyriums when I want a faster, more responsive ride. The A23s have about 5,000 miles (8,000 km) on them. This morning, while replacing the tires, I discovered 3-5mm cracks emanating from all but a few of the spoke holes on the drive side of the rear wheel. There were no cracks on the non-drive side spoke holes. This speaks of a design flaw. Now, I'm a big guy at 240lbs (108 kilos), and can do a 15mi TT under 40minutes on a road bike, so my size and power may have contributed to this systemic failure, but this is the first wheel set in my 40 years of riding that has exhibited this type of failure.

Strength:

Wider rim making riding cushier...

Weakness:

Not heat welded which in my opinion caused the failure at the joint of
my rear wheel...

Never had a failure of this type before which
my mechanic and I both attribute to the construction
methods used...

Strength:

They look nice

Weakness:

Material is weak
Radial and lateral trueness not up to current standards

After riding with the A23 rims I noticed a ding in one side of the rear wheel. This causes a slight bulge on the braking surface so essentially the rim becomes a throwaway. Now I don't remember hitting a pothole or anything else and this was only after a few weeks of riding. I'm only about 64 kg and I am very easy on my equipment. Needless to say I will not be building any more wheels with A23 rims. Some of the other Velocity rims appear to have a good reputation. Still, I'm taking Velocity off of my buy list.

Strength:

-Good color choices
-Liked the 23mm wide profile for better handling
-Tubeless compatible
-Reasonable weight for the profile

Weakness:

-Prone to cracking
-Iffy seam joints sometimes produce brake pulsing
-Marginal stiffness

Had a set of these built up with White Industry hubs and the anodized blue rims. Overall was pretty happy with the wheelset. They took tubeless tires pretty well (although they lost alot of tension when I first mounted a set of tubeless tires- enough to merit a trip to the LBS for re-tensioning) and they had a nice look to them. However the stiffness wasn't the best in the rear. And worst of all mine developed large cracks around 4 nipples after about 10K miles of use. While 10K of mileage for a set of rims isn't horrible, I would have expected them to last at least twice as long. Using an OC rim and nipple washers in the rear would probably mitigate this from happening and give better stiffness as well, but they didn't have the OC option when mine were built up.
Again a decent rim, especially if you want a non-standard color to make your ride stand out a bit. But given the current price of these rims, I think there are better options out there with significantly better quality and finish.

Strength:

Width. Finish Quality. Moderate Weight. Strength.

Weakness:

Not the lightest.

Slight increase in width allows wider tires and provides greater strength with small weight penalty. Great braking surface.
